2007: The Year of Opportunity
The 2007 election year presents vast opportunities for the political landscape of the city of Memphis. With each city council seat up for re-election in addition to the Mayor’s race, 2007 is bound to be an interesting year with the potential of changing the face of Memphis politics.
While the 2006 elections may have presented constituents with the longest voting ballot in Shelby County history, 2007’s election cycle will likely be one of the most important in recent terms. It is apparent when reviewing our current political climate that there is a need for change in business as usual. With these elections, we now have the opportunity to restore the public’s trust and faith in local government and its representatives.
For years, the citizens of Memphis have been able to view the political games being played by elected officials, and many have been led to believe that they are powerless in the effort to maintain an elected body of persons who will serve constituents with integrity, passion, knowledge and dignity. This notion is false, and we must realize that to ensure the future of our social, civic and economic welfares, we have to seize this opportunity to reestablish a governing body that will keep foremost in their minds the needs of their constituents and their role as servants to the people
The citizens of Memphis must be aware that the future political direction and advancement of this city as a whole depends on (WE) the citizens electing competent officials with fresh ideas who share one common outlook—“Working Today For a Better Memphis Tomorrow”
At New Path, it is our mission to encourage young persons in the city of Memphis to step forward and become more involved in the political process with the belief that they are the future leaders of tomorrow. In light of recent trends, however, we recognize that there is an immediate need for ALL Memphis & Shelby County citizens to get involved this election year-- be it by assisting a qualified candidate in his/her campaign efforts, participating in voter education/registration activities, or by simply casting a vote for change on Election Day.
We encourage everyone to get involved and do your part to make the city of Memphis a better place to live, love, work and enjoy.
